Apartment and Condominium Vegetable Gardening

Most of our posts are geared towards home owners with yards and exclude our neighbors in apartments and condominiums. This is going to change today because EVERYONE has the opportunity and ability to bring joy to their life with gardening, and health to their life by growing their own fruits and vegetables. If you have any piece of sunny space available at home you can succeed with a lovely little harvest.  Take a look at these pictures of our own experiments with balcony/patio gardening.

Planted late May, you can already see the little green beans coming through!

Ahhh little yellow zucchini is lovely in salads, stews or pickled. Look at the size of those leaves! They're the size of an adult hand, and do you see the yellow bloom in the background? A great addition to a balcony/patio

Full sized tomatoes such as plum or slicer can be a bit heavy for a potted garden and need reinforcement. Try cherry tomatoes instead. Small and sweet, they make for great salads.

I bet you never thought you could grow beets on your balcony, but as you can see, YES YOU CAN! Beets take a long time to grow just like most root vegetables, but they should be ready come Autumn.

Fruits and berries can also be grown quite easily. Here is a strawberry plant. Consider getting a small breed of lemon tree too...anything is possible.

For each of these plants we used simple everyday pots we had laying around. We used normal potting soil, although you can get enriched soil specifically for fruits and vegetables in the Home & Garden section of your local store. The plants themselves were grown from seeds. To find out more information on seeds have a look at our Seeds vs. Seedlings post.

Happy Gardening to EVERYONE!
